Making Electric Affordable? 🔌

Volkswagen ID 2

Set to be the latest addition to their All Electric ID range. The Volkswagen ID 2 could be the first low-cost electric vehicle from one of the big German Manufacturers. If not the EV market in its entirety.

You’re probably trying to figure out which model the the ID.2  is the electric version of?

More than likely, you’re exactly right!  Volkswagen say it pays homage to the Polo, Golf and even the Beetle.

It’s difficult to see where the Beetle influence lies. However the other two are ever apparent even at the first glance of the new electric supermini.

Especially with Volkswagen stating that the ID.2 will be “as spacious as a golf” and “as inexpensive as a polo”

Opting for a front wheel drivetrain will allow the Volkswagen ID 2 to maximise its interior occupancy and boot capacity.

This also enables the incorporation of more technological features including a beautiful 12.9″ infotainment screen & a 10.9″ Driver cockpit display.

The Volkswagen ID 2 Price

Rumour has it that prices will start around £22,000 for the base models the ID 2 sits under its larger ID.3 brother in the VW electric range.

Boasting an impressive 225hp with a desired battery range of 280 miles going from 10% – 80% charge in just 20 Minutes.

With release of the ID.2 expected in 2026, the affordable electric Volkswagen is still a few years off by which time competitor options such as the Peugeot e-208 and Vauxhall Corsa-e could still become more affordable than the ID.2 as infrastructure & manufacturing costs improve.

However at present, Volkswagens electrical offerings have provided a fantastic combination of efficiency and excitement across its all-electric range and we expect the ID.2 to be an appropriate addition to the line up.

With the ID.2 still some way off, check out our live Volkswagen deals whilst we wait.

The All New Mercedes Benz VISION EQXX

This week, we witnessed the unveiling of the all-new Mercedes Vision car, a fully electric concept car which is stated to achieve over 1000KM (620 Miles) on a single charge.

Although it has only just appeared on our screens, the all-new Mercedes EQXX has already become the talk of the automotive industry.

Driving Range

The engineers at Mercedes have been working effortlessly to develop a drivetrain that improves energy capacity, further to, improving aerodynamics to maximise range efficiency.

Adding that the range is “completely realistic” and is the direct result being an “efficiency masterpiece”.

Mercedes Benz VISION EQXX Rear
Mercedes Benz VISION EQXX Compact Battery

Mercedes claim that the massive range comes from rethinking fundamentals which allows you to go further for less.

Mercedes Benz VISION EQXX Battery

The battery pack was co-developed with the Mercedes-AMG F1 engineers.

Although 50% smaller than that of the Mercedes EQS, The battery pack in the Vision EQXX is a staggering 30% lighter.

Proving that less can mean more!

Producing 204hp, the all-new Mercedes Vision EQXX will draw its power from a single charge and has an estimated range of 1000Km or 620 miles, making it the highest range electric car!

Aerodynamics

The main talking point thus far, is the unique exterior styling. Mercedes claims the emphasis placed on exterior design will be a key focal point for the evolution of electric vehicles, as they aim to phase out sales of combustion engine vehicles within the U.K by 2030.

Furthermore, it has a drag coefficient of just 0.17, making it the most aerodynamic Mercedes to date. The nearest competitor, would be a Tesla Model S that has a drag coefficient of 0.24.

Mercedes Benz VISION EQXX Aerodynamics

How much power do solar cells produce?

The new Mercedes Vision EQXX benefits from 117 solar cells which are designed to offset energy usage. These cells were co-developed by Europe’s leading solar energy research company, Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE.

Mercedes Benz VISION EQXX Solar Cells

It is estimated that solar cells can add up to 25km range over a long-distance journey.

To put the outstanding range of the new Mercedes EQXX  into perspective, it is the equivalent of driving from Paris to Berlin on just one single charge.

Mercedes Benz VISION EQXX Interior

Vegan Interior

Designed with sustainability in mind, the interior is made using vegan friendly materials.

The seats are made using crushed cactus fibres and mushrooms, which creates an emulation of leather.

Conclusion

Whilst Mercedes have made some bold assertions regarding the product innovation and vehicle range, the range is always an estimate and is subject to several conditions such as; temperature, tyre pressure and road surfaces.

Furthermore, a certified range won’t be released until Europe’s Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) conduct an independent test.

Mercedes Benz VISION EQXX Release

It’s also highly unlikely that the Vision EQXX will enter production in its current form, rather, it will be used as an example used to showcase the direction the brand aspires to go.

Despite this, the Vision EQXX  draws emphasis to aerodynamic efficiency and the sustainability of the materials used during production. It will act as a benchmark for Mercedes and their competitors to follow as the automotive industry shifts from combustion engines to electric power.

This blog post is all about the Peugeot 2008 2020 model year and the difference it has to the 2016 model, further, how the model has also stayed within its DNA with specific features.

This compact SUV (which isn’t four-wheel drive) has loads to offer. It has six trim levels for you to choose from depending on your preferences.

The Range

  • Active
  • Active premium
  • Allure
  • Allure premium
  • GT

The Peugeot 2008 20 plate model

Interior

Compared to previous versions, the Peugeot 2008’s interior has had a significant uplift, and it has a sporty look/feel to it. The steering wheel is still compact with a flat bottom and top to it, and it has a dual-layered dashboard.

The car also has an updated 7″ entertainment system which is an improvement from the previous model (comes as standard from the active model), which is standard form the Active model and a 10.0″ HD screen (comes as standard from the Allure premium model), this is a step up from the previous 2008 model. According to versions of the vehicle, you can have sat nav downloaded onto the Peugeot 2008.

Some versions of 2008 now have an I-cockpit with a digital speedometer which almost gives it a 3D effect.

Along with a choice of 8 colours, you can get sleek ambient lighting and detailed coloured stitching.

Like the previous model, this car has an impressive amount of space for a small SUV.

There are many storage compartments in the front and the back, you can fit three people in the end comfortably.

The boot space is big enough to fit around three suitcases, another gem with this car is that the boot has storage under the boot floor, there is also no boot lip, so it is easy to get baggage on and off the vehicle without damaging it.

It has a piano key control system, so it is easy to access whilst driving.

Engine

This car comes in Petrol, Diesel and Electric engines with both automatic and manual choices, the previous model, did not have the electric engine option, which shows how far we have come over the last couple of years.

You are now able to get auto and manual across petrol and diesel whereas the previous model only allowed you to have auto on the petrol engine.

Exterior

The Peugeot 2008 has a new sporty design. The front LED lighting features on the front of the car, almost look like a little lion with the eyes and teeth. The edges look rounder and give the vehicle an excellent sporty design.

You can also customise the colour of the grill (depending on the model you buy).

The doors go over the seals, which means no dirt gets inside the car; this also means no dirty trousers!

Its good to see that the Peugeot 2008 has stuck with some of its DNA by keeping the big grill.

Key Features

This car has four charging ports! Two in the front and two in the back, and if this isn’t enough depending on the model, you can also get a wireless charger port compartment for your phone!

It’s getting cold and the nights are drawing in, so it’s time to get prepared for some winter driving. We have pulled together some tips on how to drive safely this winter.

Is your car due for a service?

Ensure your car has had a service before entering into winter months to handle the more challenging weather conditions. It’s always better to get any problems fixed before than putting you or other road users at risk. You can check your owner’s handbook for recommended service schedule dates. However, you should have your car serviced after 12,000 miles or every 12 months.

Car Tools

How to check your oil levels

Checking your oil levels, this should be between the minimum and the maximum mark on your car’s dipstick.

Synthetic oils are known to expand when they’re cold, therefore, some manufacturers will recommend checking the oil once the engine has warmed up. Run your engine for 5 – 10 minutes, then ensure that it’s switched off before checking the oil level.

To prevent accidents or burns from hot fluids and mechanical components, DO NOT check it when the engine is running.

For further information, refer to your vehicle handbook!

Also, ensure that you have plenty of fuel in your tank before you start your journeys.

Top tip: too much oil is as bad as too little oil.

Why is it important to keep your headlights clean?

Due to the extreme weather conditions during the winter there is a lot more salt and dirt on the roads, you can lose an estimated 40% of luminosity in about 20 miles on a damp gritty motorway according to road safety charity IAM road smart. Make sure that you wipe your lights before and after your journeys with a cloth to make sure these are clean. It is also essential to check your lights are in full working order before setting off on your journey.

Top tip – make sure your registration plate is clean as you could face a fine if it is not readable.

Car Break lights

Wiper blades and window screen care

Ensure that your wipers are in full working order with no rips or holes; this will help keep your screen clear during wet and snowy weathers and not damage your window screen.

Having plenty of washer fluid for your screen is very important, especially during winter as your car picks up more dirt due to the weather conditions, it is also illegal to have no washer fluid.

Checking your tyres

It is essential to check the tyre pressure, tread, and wear. Checking your tyres is always a must, but during winter conditions, you need to be extra cautious as this will increase your stopping distance, making it ten times longer during icy, snowy, and wet conditions. Ensure that your tyre pressure is correct; this will be in your vehicle manual. Tyres need a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm by law.

Top tip: in winter experts suggest that you change yes at 3mm to maintain safe stopping distances.

If you drive in rural areas where snow happens every year during the winter season, you should invest in snow chains for your car. Snow chains are an excellent way of gaining extra grip and traction control, although, they should only be used when the roads are layered with a sufficient quantity of snow.

Top tip: in winter experts suggest that you change yes at 3mm to maintain safe stopping distances.

Why antifreeze is a must

Antifreeze won’t break the bank but to repair a cracked engine will, you need a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water in the winter, this will protect your engine down to -34c, most modern cars use long-life antifreeze which only needs changing after two years.

Checking your breaks

As always your brakes need to be in the best condition, but in winter, this is even more important as your stopping distance has increased in snowy/icy conditions. If your brakes make unusual noises, then get them checked asap. If your car has been standing still during freezing conditions, then remember to set off slowly in case your hand brake has frozen over.

Quick tips

  • Always allow extra time for your journey.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Clear all windows using a scraper and de-icer – do not use your window wipers to clear the ice from your screen, as this could cause the rubber to rip.
  • Don’t ignore your car alerts; get them checked.
  • A warning triangle, some manufacturers provide this and store it in your car.
  • Shovel ( will be needed in snowy conditions)

While driving is very enjoyable, we’ve all experienced an unpleasant journey, which can often be because another road user isn’t being considerate of those around them.

A study published by RAC in 2019 claims that there has been a rise in aggression amongst British drivers.

Further, 36% of those surveyed stated that their biggest fear is the actions of other drivers!

Contractcars.com has compiled a list of 10 annoying driving habits for you to avoid, encouraging drivers to be considerate of others, helping to keep British roads safe!

#1 – Double Parking (Clarkson Parking)

You might not be familiar with the term, but you will certainly be familiar with the technique.

“Clarkson parking”, nicknamed after Grand Tour host Jeremy Clarkson, is the act of deliberately parking across two spaces to prevent nearby vehicles from hitting your car door.

While this has become a common joke amongst motoring enthusiasts, it can certainly be frustrating for those who have to spend hours circling the car park looking for a parking space.

When you exit your vehicle, take a second to look back and ensure that you’re parked within the bay.

#2 – Inappropriate use of turn signals

From indicating too early or too late, to not signalling whatsoever, it is all irritating and hazardous to those around you.

All vehicles come equipped with indicators and are a legal requirement for a car to be deemed road legal.

#3 – Lane Hogging

We’ve all been on the motorway, stuck behind that slow-moving driver, who refuses to move into the slow land and let you pass!

While the police have vowed to clamp down on lane hogging, it’s still a reoccurring issue that people face on the motorway.

When on the motorway, you should monitor your rear-view mirror for vehicles approaching you from behind at a faster speed and allow them to pass with ease, to prevent any excessive breaking or swerving, which could endanger other road users!

#4 - Failure to check blind spots

Opposite to the person above, these drivers are too eager to switch lanes, doing so without checking blind spots and mirrors for surrounding vehicles or pedestrians. Often swerving into your lane, before swerving back to avoid a collision.

This is extremely dangerous and concerning for drivers!

Remember – it’s mirror, signal & THEN manoeuvre.

#5 – Driving painfully below the speed limit

Ok, we get that you’re cautious. But if you go any slower, we’ll end up getting parking tickets!

This can be infuriating to drivers behind, who are waiting and waiting for you to build up speed. In the eyes of the law, driving too slowly is hazardous to vehicles which are travelling at the appropriate speed limit and could encourage other road users to make reckless decisions.

If you’re stuck behind someone who’s travelling excessively under the speed limit, take a breath and wait for an appropriate and safe opportunity to pass. Angry drivers are bad drivers. Do not tailgate!

Which leads us directly into number six!

#6 – Tailgating

Tailgating might seem like an appropriate way to deal with drivers who are lane hogging and refuse to pull into the slow lane, although, it could seriously reduce your braking distance in the event of an incident and could result in a very bad ending.

Remember to maintain an appropriate distance between you and the vehicle in front.

If the driver in front is forced to brake harshly and you collide with the back of their vehicle, the insurance company will likely put you at fault, due to your failure to leave appropriate breaking distance between.

#7 – Brake Checking

If you’re experiencing a tailgater, you might feel that it’s a good idea to tap of the brakes, to encourage the driver behind to increase their distance from you.

This is a dangerous manoeuvre, as the car behind could easily crash into the rear end of your vehicle, damaging both vehicles and possibly injuring any passengers!

#8 – Jumping traffic lights

We’ve all been in a rush to get to a destination on time, although, that’s not a valid excuse to break the law.

Traffic lights exist for a very important purpose, to prevent accidents! Jumping a light could cause a serious collision, damaging other vehicles and potentially injuring pedestrians!

#9 – Leaving high-beam headlights on when another vehicle is passing

For many modern vehicles, this shouldn’t be an issue, due to auto-dimming high beam assist!

A camera located at the front of the vehicle identifies oncoming vehicles and automatically dims the headlights to prevent accidents.

Unfortunately, not every vehicle is equipped with this technology. Meaning that drivers still face the chance of being dazzled by an oncoming driver using his full-beam headlights.

This can be seriously dangerous, as it can impact visibility and drivers’ ability to prevent an accident. Be considerate of other road users!

#10 – Not allowing people to merge

There’s no law which states that you must allow drivers to merge, especially if you have the right of way!

Although, if you’re in slow-moving traffic, cutting off a merging vehicle won’t get you very far. You could potentially cause a collision, just to be one car length ahead!

It’s nice to be nice, have patience and allow people to merge where possible.

Drive safely, everyone!
